Canada Day 2020: New Ways to Celebrate

Canada Day 2020: New Ways to Celebrate

This Canada Day we can still celebrate, we just need to get creative given the social distancing rules in place. Parks are open, but instead of packing a picnic basket and heading to a shady tree, consider making a big splash at home.

Sing the National Anthem

When you wake up and before you go to bed. Try it in English, then switch to French or sing a combo of both. But, sing it loud and sing it proud!

Hang a Canada Flag

Off the porch, out your window, on your balcony it doesn’t have to be big or official.

A homemade flag put together with construction paper or markers is just as patriotic. In a pinch, a Happy Birthday banner will do.

Eat All Your Favorite Foods

Staying home gives you the luxury of a fully equipped kitchen, running water and a fridge/freezer. Plan ahead, and pre-cook your picnic favorites. Potato salad, coleslaw, and dips taste even better if prepared the day before.

Don't want to make a mess, but still want to indulge in all your favorite foods? Consider ordering a Canada Day cake, Canadian wine, beer, mock tail supplies and favorite foods like butter chicken, butter tarts and jerk chicken from indie shops in your neighborhood.

Make a Canada Day Playlist

Canada is a nation of superstars who sing in every imaginable genre. From A to Z there's something great for everyone.

Here are a few of our favorite and very famous Canadian musicians to get your playlist started:

Anne Murray

Avril Lavigne

A Tribe Called Red

Buffy Sainte-Marie

Celine Dion

Gordon Lightfoot

Justin Bieiber

Shania Twain

Tanya Tagaq

The Weeknd

The Tragically Hip

Sarah McLachlin.

Play Games

No party is complete without games! Set up the sprinkler, fill a few water balloons and grab the sidewalk chalk. Invite the neighbors to play lawn charades (each family playing from their own lawn). Or try a friendly game of Canadian Trivia Family Edition. Prefer a quiet, solo activity? The Globe and Mail puts out a special edition Canada Day crossword, and many other puzzles.
